NH to Modernize Voter Registration Under New Law

CONCORD, N.H. — New Hampshire took steps to modernize voter registration when Gov. Kelly Ayotte signed S.B. 438 into law last week. The law directs local officials to reference a state database to help confirm the citizenship of someone registering to vote, as many voters have already provided the state with documents proving their citizenship. It reduces the burden on voters and optimizes inter-agency communication to ensure election integrity in New Hampshire.

The new law addresses concerns that some citizens had been prevented from voting under the state’s 2024 proof-of-citizenship law.

Secure Democracy USA Advocacy Director Diego Echeverri released the following statement:

“No one wants to see seniors blocked from registering to vote because they couldn’t find their birth certificate, or a single mom give up on voting because she doesn’t have her passport. S.B. 438 will fix a burdensome proof-of-citizenship mandate that failed too many New Hampshire citizens. It keeps state voter rolls clean and continues to ensure that only citizens vote in our elections.
