Secure Democracy USA applauds Michigan Legislature for prioritizing election integrity, military voting

LANSING, Mich. — Earlier today, the Michigan Legislature approved a bipartisan legislative package that will make the upcoming November election more smooth and efficient by allowing clerks to pre-process ballots before Election Day. After the bills passed, Diego Echeverri, director of advocacy for Secure Democracy USA, issued the following statement:

“Providing clerks with the tools they need to run efficient, safe and secure elections is essential. We applaud Michigan legislators for voting to make elections more efficient this November by allowing local clerks to pre-process absentee ballots two days before Election Day.

“Simply put, this critical improvement will ensure every ballot is properly counted while making it easier for election results to be tallied in a timely manner — especially crucial as more individuals are choosing to cast their vote using an absentee ballot.

“We also applaud the effort to make it easier for active-duty military members to secure vote electronically in the upcoming elections. This is a long-overdue way to truly ensure the votes of active military members are counted.

This legislative action is a huge win for Michigan, and we encourage Governor Whitmer to sign this legislation quickly so that updated rules and procedures may be provided to Michigan clerks well in advance of the upcoming November election.”
