Secure Democracy Releases New Television Ad with Six-Figure Texas Media Buy Opposing SB 9 Ahead of Upcoming Hearing

On Wednesday, Secure Democracy released the following statement:
AUSTIN, TX – Today, Secure Democracy launched a six-figure TV and digital ad buy airing in multiple media markets across the state. The campaign is aimed at educating lawmakers and Texas voters about SB 9’s potential to negatively impact voters across the state, particularly the elderly and disabled.
The Secure Democracy ad highlights how SB 9 would punish certain voters—like disabled veterans—by allowing partisan poll workers to look over their shoulder while they cast their ballot. The bill would also make it harder for people with disabilities who can’t get to the polls in person to get a ballot in the mail.
Additionally, Secure Democracy released a new statewide poll today, which found overwhelming opposition to SB 9’s targeting of elderly and disabled voters. The poll found that 86% of Texans—including 88% of Republicans—oppose making it harder for the elderly or disabled to get a ballot in the mail.
“The security and integrity of our elections matters to all Texas voters, but SB 9 would unfairly penalize disabled voters--including the brave men and women who have been injured serving our country—making it harder for disabled voters to get an absentee ballot,” said Colin Weaver, Director of State Affairs at Secure Democracy. “It would also allow partisan poll watchers to watch over elderly and disabled voters who need assistance while they cast their vote—denying them the dignity and privacy that our nation’s heroes deserve.”
SB 9 has already passed the Senate and a hearing at the House Elections Committee is scheduled for May 13th.
