Texas Senate Approves Bill to Take Ballot Cure, Pre-Processing Statewide
AUSTIN, Texas. – On Monday, the Senate successfully passed S.B. 1599, a bill that would create a statewide cure process for absentee ballots and ballot applications, strengthen the existing online cure process for absentee ballots, and establish nine days for clerks to pre-process absentee ballots ahead of Election Day. Secure Democracy USA’s Senior Policy Director Daniel Griffith released the following statement:
"When a voter makes a minor mistake on their absentee ballot or ballot application, they should have the chance to fix it and have their vote count, just as voters casting a ballot in person can. S.B. 1599 will make sure that nothing so small as a missing signature or date on an absentee ballot envelope denies an eligible Texan of their freedom to vote.
"S.B. 1599 will also make Texas elections more secure, more transparent, and more efficient by allowing election officials to begin processing mail ballots earlier ahead of Election Day.
“We applaud Senator Bryan Hughes for his leadership on this bill, and now urge the House to send S.B. 1599 to Gov. Abbott's desk."
