Michigan Puts Voters First With Passage of Promote The Vote Bills
Lansing, Mich. – This week, the Michigan legislature passed a series of bills implementing the Promote the Vote (Proposal 2) initiative approved by the voters in the 2022 general election. The legislative package now heads to Governor Whitmer for her signature.
Statement from Secure Democracy USA Director of Advocacy Diego Echeverri:
"Michigan voters demanded fair, secure, and accessible elections last fall, and that’s exactly what the Promote the Vote proposals do. The legislature has sent Governor Whitmer a strong package of bills that will ensure free and fair elections in Michigan, and we strongly urge her to sign them into law.”
The legislative package includes:
Nine days of in-person early voting, including the last two weekends before Election Day
Signature cure processes for absentee ballot applications and absentee ballots
Ballot tracking for all absentee ballots
Minimum access and security requirements for drop boxes
Option for all voters to sign up to receive absentee ballots automatically for every election
Earlier processing and tabulation of absentee ballots
On-site tabulation of absentee ballots returned to an early voting site or polling place
Pre-paid postage for absentee ballots
