Voter Eligibility Transparency Bill Passes Michigan Senate, Must Be Prioritized in House

Lansing, MI - Yesterday, the Michigan state senate passed S.B. 835, which will improve transparency about voting eligibility for Michigan citizens with past felony convictions. The bill requires the Michigan Department of Corrections to provide these citizens with clear, accurate information about their eligibility; election dates; how to register to vote; and how to vote in person, early, or by mail.

As lawmakers close out business in the final days of the 2024 legislative session, Secure Democracy USA urges the Michigan House of Representatives to pass this bill and Gov. Whitmer to sign it into law.

Diego Echeverri, advocacy director for Secure Democracy USA, issued the following statement:

“Every Michigan citizen deserves the freedom to vote and to have the information needed to fully participate in our democracy. This bill is a commonsense solution to further ensure free, fair, and transparent elections take place in Michigan. We thank the Senate for taking action on this bill and urge the House to do the same by sending this legislation to Governor Whitmer’s desk before the end of the year.”
