Flawed Arizona Election Review Leaves Blueprint for Election Subversion Nationwide

As the results from Maricopa County’s election review were released today, Secure Democracy executive director Sarah Walker issued the following statement:

“Maricopa County’s election review was flawed from the start. Despite concluding that election officials conducted a smooth and fair election with accurate results, the process only further undermined confidence in our elections. We are now seeing copy-cat attempts to hold similar politically-motivated election investigations, including in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Texas. From allowing more frivolous lawsuits challenging the results of an election to enacting criminal penalties for election officials and workers to allowing outside parties to tamper with voters’ private ballots, we are also seeing an onslaught of legislative measures in states across the country that will subvert the integrity of our elections.”

“At a time when our local election officials are being threatened and partisan actors are purposely misleading the public about the integrity of our election results, we cannot let ourselves be swayed by conspiracy theories that only harm our democratic institutions and undermine confidence in our voting systems. Secure Democracy will continue to build alliances across the political spectrum to strengthen our democracy and ensure partisan actors cannot silence the voices of everyday Americans by manipulating our elections.”

  • Secure Democracy recently held a briefing with Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer and former Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson on how the Arizona election review is influencing election subversion efforts across the country. You can view the briefing here.

  • Last month, Secure Democracy and Protect Democracy released a new poll showing that Americans of all political affiliations support federal action to prevent election subversion measures. You can view the poll here.
